Music 01/25/2012
_The music room is a busy place this time of year. In K, we are just finishing up with the first group of children in the half day program and I'm about to meet my new little ones! The children have been playing non-pitched percussion instruments such as drums, maracas and the gongs, while learning to play a steady beat. The children are also in the process of learning to read rhythms- ta, ti-ti, and rest. In 1st grade we have a very important performance the children have been working hard on...Grandparents' Day! Our big day is scheduled for Wednesday, March 14, 2012 @ 10:00am in the AES gymnasium. The second grade children are currently playing the xylophones and working on playing various instrumental parts as a class. Shortly, they will begin learning songs for their big performance, A tribute to Music which is scheduled for Tuesday May 22, 2012 @ 10:00am in the AES gymnasium. In 3rd grade big things are also happening here! We're learning to read the notes of the Treble Clef and we are just about to order our RECORDERS! The fourth grade children have been playing their recorders for the past few months and have done a fabulous job! They can now read B, A, G, C, D, and their new note, E on the Treble Clef. They are currently playing the xylophones with up to 4 different instrumental parts being played at the same time, creating beautiful harmony. Add Comment RadKids 01/12/2012

Open Circle is our school-wide social skills program. The program's mission as stated on their web-site (www.open-circle.org): Our mission is to work with school communities to help children become ethical people, contributing citizens and successful learners. By helping schools implement Open Circle, we foster the development of relationships that support safe, caring and respectful learning communities of children and adults. We believe strongly in the Open Circle program. It is also serves as our bullying training program for the children. We are very grateful to the training provided by the PTO to newly hired staff. Beginning on Sunday, the 13th, we have hosted a team reviewing our self-study for reaccreditation. On Sunday, the team enjoyed Lakeville's history as told by retired teacher, Mrs. Nancy LaFave as well as several fourth grade songs and a staff reception. Monday through today was spent meeting with teachers, parents, administration and School Committee. The team visited classrooms, lunch, etc. and truly gained a sense of our school. The initial feedback has been very positive. We look forward to their report over the coming months. Photos below! URI Professor Guest Teaches in 3Maguire 11/09/2011
Professor Rachel McCormack, literacy professor at the University of Rhode Island guest taught reading lessons in Mrs. Maguire's class on November 7. The third grade staff was invited to watch on as we rarely get the chance to watch others teach. Professor McCormack taught a week long workshop in June to much of the K-3 staff at both Assawompset and Freetown. We have enjoyed reviewing best strategies and methods in reading with her.
